No, they have always dropped the weapon at first sign of damage according to both the old and new AI scripts.

I think it might be confusing because if you were hitting them often, they were stuck in the "hurt" animation and would keep replaying that animation until it could switch to the "drop" animation?

I think they don't need to do the drop animation. They have a DROP_GRIP_FX flag in one of their hurt animations that automatically detaches held item.

Was the animation interruptable? I certainly seem to remember hitting them over and over again with a fast weapon and they end up falling on the ground and dropping their weapons.

I don't remember. I don't think I notice any difference in the Lumpkin behaviour compared to before.
