Problems with melee

Hey there, I just found out about this game and it has already managed to eat the better part of my day :)

When using magic or ranged weapons I am doing sort of fine, but its enough to just equip a melee weapon and I get mobbed, poisoned, eaten, stomped on, etc. My shield gets parried and the hits usually don't connect. 1 vs 1 is hard enough but the area full with Tranches after the Sand Troll seems impossible without dieing all the time.

Is there a secret super technique-fu that I am missing to make melee viable?

This probably has something to do with your class. Some are much better at Melee combat than others.
Elves and Wizards, for example, are poor melee fighters.

As purple said, elves and wizards are bad at melee- and classes like the healer don't do that well either.

Basically, this is something like the order of good at melee combat is:

Weakest: Elves and wizards. No STR growth makes the elf exceedingly bad at melee.

Weak: Healer.

Average: G'nome and Adventurer and Rogue and archaeologist.

Strong: Soldier and paladin and Zombi.

Actually, the Healer is a fair melee fighter, even though she can't use a very great variety of weapons.

It also takes a little skill and getting used to the way combat flows.
Tranches for example are very easy to beat, just keep moving and attack when they recover from a jump. They are also weak against crushing weapons, so use one if you have it.

The troll can be taken down with the wand of lightning you get from the previous room. You can dish greater damage if you lure him into a corner where the lightning will bounce and hit him many times.

Well yeah, but she's still outclassed by the other classes except the wizard and elf, methinks. Especially with her low speed and defense.

Until she gets the self healing rune stuff. Thats just broken...

Yes, but remember that wand of lighting isn't effective when he turns into stone(120defence(-48%dmg) and after this 1/8 damage reduction AND he regenerates). Best damage type on troll is fire and crush, fire before he changes to stone and crush when he is turned into stone. I recommend keeping wand of lighting for later.
As for tranches I agree but i want to add that u dont need to kill them, i usually run away from them, they are too bothering to fight with, when there's possibilty to get poisoned. Also, tranches can be crushed with shutter doors.

Thanks for the cookie :) I know that a wizard is weaker at melee, but I am using an adventurer. Its fine when its 1 on 1 but once swarmed I cant do anything but block, cause otherwise I'll get hit. How the hell can I clear the room filled with Tranches after the Sand Troll without dieing?

Seems like I'm stuck with the wizard too, the Scorpion is faster than me so I cant outrun him to cast spells safely.

Do you have a sword or a katana? You have to get very close for swords to hit, but in exchange they can hit multiple enemies in one swipe, which is very helpful when you're fighting against larger numbers of enemies, and does great damage to top it off.

You can use wand of lighting on him, he is weak to ZAP type attacks. You can use it on higher range, it should do.

Thanks Clonkinator, the sword is great for multiple monsters. Died a few times on Trogs do to the range of spears and them always breaking my block. How should I fight Scorpion without the lightning wand? Use a spear?

You can try using landmines nearby, also slashing weapons might cut off hes claws (but u still must watch out for the sting) spear isnt a bad choice because of it's range. You can try crossbows too. But Wand of Lighting really rocks against him, when i use it he doesnt even hit me once.

The lightning wand and any zap attacks should do well.

In my opinion, if you're better at magic and ranged, you should use magic and ranged. They can be very effective if used properly, although not all people are good at it.

Hehe, it is usually the opposite for new players :P Melee is easy and magic/ranged is the difficult one to master :)

If you like to block attacks, use the soldier. His blocks cannot be parried.

You said you were playing as an adventurer, right? Did you keep the missile spell that you get in the starter module? If yes, you might want to try that one. It does ZAP damage, which the scorpion is super-weak against, and since your mana regenerates by itself you can actually beat the scorpion that way without even actually engaging him in melee combat or wasting precious uses of that lightning wand.
