That and teetering precariously on the edge of actually putting all that passion to paper and drawing something, but never quite getting there. :P

I do have a couple of Aria of Ruin sketches that could have been that I never showed, though, so in the spirit of the season:
Spoiler: Drafts for some sort of movie poster-type thing
ImageImage
Think those kinds of "all cast members looking dramatic" type things.
Spoiler: Nica sketches brainstorming further down the character arc
ImageImage
You can see I was very engaged by the coat cape look. :P Also nevermind that I retconned her boots...
I think all of them are from a year ago, if not more.

I colored in one of your sketches again, hope you don't mind. :P
Spoiler: Nica

Had fun coming up with the shading since I usually just copy stuff, seems to have come out all right.
Happy... New Year's Eve Eve?

Aaah, I sure would forget what a good choice it was to give her the pale/blonde/ice blue combo if it wasn't for you, thank you. :P
In my head I always figured her vest would be red and coat dusty brown or black, but you certainly make a good case for the black on black...

And you did well with the shading, yeah. The creases on the vest in particular look excellent!

I miss those times too.

Oh yeah, happy new year, I guess.

Happy new year!

I'm sorry to hear that, man. :( Is it just real-world stuff being hectic, or?

The past two years have been... rough, to put it mildly. But that's nothing you folks should trouble yourselves with.
Other than that it's just my health getting worse, but that's not really anything new.

Say, what kind of ruleset would you be using if you were to start a PnP?
As you might remember, I've been playing PnPs with some other folks every now and then, and while the ruleset we're using has the same roots as Cime's, I've been taking it in a slightly different direction.
If you're curious, I could translate it and post it here.

I would certainly base it off of Cime's as well. Depending on the setting/tone Stress may not be called for (and something else for abilities/mechanics to interact with might replace it) but besides that I can't think of much I'd feel needed adjusting.
If you feel like translating I'd definitely be happy to check out your variant, though. :)

Meanwhile, I've decided to look at my notes for that idea I posted about earlier and write up some of the world-building or whatever because I was bored.
So now I'm posting it because I know you are all very interested. :P
Spoiler: A bit long
The Water City of Salcea
A port city on the western coast.
The streets and waters are always full of traders and fishermen.
It welcomes people from all over Imsant.
Its leader, Pyris, makes sure business is conducted fairly.

The Fire City of Vryno
A city on the edge of the desert and mountains of the north-west.
Its people are known for mining and smithing.
Without trade, it would not have the resources to support itself.
Its visitors are all business.
Its leader, Tredar, ensures quality craftsmanship.

The Air City of Kler
A city on a tall hill near the mountains in the north-east.
Its buildings are full of scholars.
People come here to study magic.
Its leader, Glenz, helps settle disputes.

The Earth City of Wrend
A city in the forest in the south-east.
The people are known for farming and hunting.
It gets few visitors because the forest is said to be confusing.
However, its exports are popular in the other cities.
Its leader, Fleru, oversees trade assignments.

The Capital City of Dezas
Near the center of Imsant is the Kingdom's capital.
The city surrounds Dezas Castle, home of the royal family.
Many of its people work in the service industry,
running inns, stables, and stores
to serve the many visitors
as well as simply working in the castle.

The King of Dezas is known to call meetings
with the leaders of the four cities
to discuss the state of the kingdom
as well as to hold parties on holidays
and special occasions.
The Queen is sometimes seen at these events
but doesn't usually seem all that interested.
The Princess is always invited but hasn't
bothered to show up in a while.
None of this stops the commonfolk from
enjoying themselves with the feasts
and tournaments and masquerades available to them.
But yeah, if I was going to do a PnP I'd probably also try to use Cime's ruleset, but I'm interested in yours as well, Shade.

It might be straightforward, but the implicit interconnectivity between everything makes for a nice setting, since you have all sorts of levers to pull to create conflict or mystery and then give players an idea of what to do about it without hand-feeding. :)

Shade showing up got me thinking about the kind of story I'd do as well... elements of indirect progression like studying the enemy remains in Aria are definitely something I'd want to be able to work in, since as Aria itself showed we so quickly moved beyond "go to encounter -> complete encounter -> go to encounter" with those things included. So of course, I'd have to come up with something to marry nicely with similar mechanics... and building details/key points out from there probably helps address my usual issue of filling out the story beats. :P

Have y'all heard of Games Done Quick? I've been enjoying watching the marathon this week, as I have each twice-yearly event since I discovered it a few years back. The density of passion for everyone's games is so pleasant to be included in, it always puts me in a better mood for the duration of the event.

Ah, sorry, I guess I'm not posting my ruleset after all. When I took another look at it and realized just how much work it'd be to translate that amount of text, I kinda lost motivation.

I'm tempted to say just post the original except that that's a terrible idea because none of us understands German.
But everyone loves Google Translate, right?

@AoD: I haven't been watching AGDQ but I might watch some of it eventually.
It's fun to see all the crazy tricks speedrunners pull off.

I still remember like a fraction of the German I studied in high school... not to mention its propensity for compound words is quite intuitive. :P

Yeah, it's pretty amazing to see just how broken games like Ocarina of Time are with 22 years' worth of limit-pushing... and new stuff is still being found!

Even if Google Translate was capable of identifying (and preserving) context during translation, I still wouldn't be able to easily run the ruleset through it due to the 5000 character limit. xD

I like speedruns (and yes, games like OoT are incredibly broken), but I feel like GDQ has gotten... less and less interesting over the past few years.
I used to particularly like watching the speedruns to some of the more obscure games, but in recent years those no longer really show up at GDQ much (if at all), so I haven't really bothered with it lately.

I definitely sympathise with that the lineup tends to get less interesting, so I expected this year's to be further relegated to background noise for the week... but I was surprised to see some "uniquely special" circumstances and runs from games that I wouldn't have batted an eyelid at otherwise, so my faith is a little renewed.

I think they save more of the cool indie games & so on for the SGDQ events, which suits me just fine as Doctors Without Borders is far and away the better charity organisation anyway...

In unrelated news, I'm buying my first car! :o
