Upon being introduced by Surlak, Natalia offers to shake the hand of this Svenn; there doesn't seem to be any reason to be distrustful of him.
"Name's Natalia. It's a pleasure." She then turns back to the taller one.
"You didn't notice? That man is the same kind of person I am -- I asked him if he'd seen you around because of that. Funny coincidence."

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that Natalia shows up after you return from your shopping spree.

Surlak, Lv0 [53] Extortionist [Cover]
12/15 HP
Spellpoints:
+1 DMG | +2 HIT | +2 AC
Weapon: Engraved Dagger [2-5 Dmg]
Armor: Auburn Cloak [1 AC, +1 to magic resistance checks], Wooden Shield [2 AC, REQ 2 STR], Leather Helm [1 AC], Leather Vambraces [1 AC]
Spoiler:
Inventory...[ 08/10 ]
- 3x Stinging Salve (restores 20 HP over 2 turns, but stuns for 1 turn)
- Travel Rations [4/5]
- Morning Dew (restores 1-5 spell points)
- Antidote (removes up to 20 stacked poison damage)
- 2x Rope Net

Spellbook...[ 02/02 ]
- Void Collapse - Creates a nucleus of extreme gravity for a split second, ripping apart anyone standing too close for 1-8+WILx3 DMG. Particularly massive opponents resist some of the damage of this spell, while particularly small targets receive greater harm.
- Ripline - A thick chain of arcane matter grabs an enemy and attempts to drag them towards the caster, dealing 1-6+WILL damage. If the target fails a VIT check against the caster's INT, they are pulled forward: Targets in the cover row are dragged to the front, and targets in the front row fall down, losing their dodge +AC and becoming vulnerable to attacks until they can get up.
Active Abilities
- Corner [0/1]: Surlak isolates an enemy, reducing their AC by 2 and preventing them from being affected by their allies' support abilities for 2 turns. This is a minor action. (70 AP)
- Hostage [0/1]: Upon hitting a cornered enemy with a spell, Surlak can choose to make the spell nonlethal and stun them if they'd otherwise die, threatening to finish them off. The threat works much better if another cast of the spell could actually kill the target. (25 AP)
(If the spell doesn't actually connect, no skill use is consumed.)

Mend [1/1] [curr: 2 turns]: Surlak ignores her wounds for just a moment, regaining up to 7 HP that are lost again after [INT] rounds. The expiration can't reduce health below 1. Overhealing during the effect will prevent the health loss. (70 AP)
Sustained Abilities
- Deterrence: Whenever an enemy dies, one random other enemy without a strong personal interest in the current battle may flee or surrender unless they pass a will test. Looking intimidating takes up a minor action every turn. (35 AP)
Passive Abilities
- Adaptible [curr: 2 AC, 1 dmg]: When running out of spell points, Surlak's WIL drops to zero and the points are distributed equally among AC and weapon damage (odd numbers increase AC first) for the remainder of the battle. (165 AP)

Conduit: Surlak can fuse additional energy into damaging spells, doing 50% less bonus damage for each spell point spent this way, min. 1 (if an example spell would do 8 damage, 4 conduit points would add 4+2+1+1). Overkill damage from the conduit bonus will affect another random hostile target. (50 AP)
Attributes:
STR: +2
DEX: -3
AGI: +2
VIT: -1
INT: +2
WIL: +3

Ability Points: 5

Scripts:
- target whoever seems the most important/could be killed this turn. preferrably target casters.
- Dangerous back row targets that likely to survive a Void Collapse should be pulled to the front.
- corner the target, then spam Void Collapse on them, attack them when out of spell points. take them hostage unless the enemies make a vaguely ruthless impression

Description:

Surlak is wiry, fairly tall and around 30, with light brown skin. She usually wears a red-brown coat, the only mark of her former community. Her posture is upright and tense, with shoulders forward. Her face is framed by wavy, almost black hair and shows some battle scars with the biggest one running from her chin to her neck. Her eyes are grey, downturned, and restless.

Surlak's origin are the Servants of the Wing, a sect notable for their belief that their religious duties, ranging from banal to extremely intricate and rarely sacrificial, are necessary for the continuity of the world. She was raised to be a guardian - a caste of magic-wielding combat-trained inspectors tasked with monitoring the world, who generally end up living among uninvolved townspeople to exert covert influence and monitor irregular activity, but are also often tasked with missions to secure ritual grounds or eliminate threats against the global leylines' stability.
She had always been driven by pervasive thoughts that she was bound to meet a terrible end, and eventually she abandoned her duties to travel the world freely, because she found it hard to bear the responsibility, as well as out of an impulse to face her apparent doom head-on and general curiosity. This was not considered a great offense, as the Servants' positions aren't bound to specific persons, but when she departed it did strain her relationship with her (literal and spiritual) family considerably.
Determined to either steel herself so she could overcome her nightmares or just get her tormentous future over with, she took on various unpleasant and dangerous jobs, mostly as a bounty hunter or bodyguard, and made a habit of openly antagonizing people she disliked.
She's generally friendly and jovial, while blunt, but disappointments and apprehension can quickly turn her cynical and withdrawn. She generally approaches people with good will, but tends to stay wary of them. When she comes to genuinely trust someone, these transform into fears of losing them due to strokes of fate or her own potential failures.
She frets constantly over tiny mistakes, but as the circumstances of her life always forced her to act spontaneously, she tends to shut down these doubts altogether and has a hard time filtering out genuinely bad ideas due to it.
Surlak can switch abruptly between extreme caution and plunging into danger head-on, as her behaviour is greatly influenced by her obsessive worries about death and loss. In overwhelming situations where immediate reality starts to resemble the scenarios she's constantly dreading, she acts vicious and rash, and in extreme cases reality just loses its meaning to her.
Surlak prefers subduing her opponents with intimidation over fighting to the death, as she feels like letting killing be part of her life brings her closer to the myriad of calamities she fears, and the very prospect of losing someone cause her great distress.
She perceives everything she appreciates in life as volatile, and greater contentment is always soured by an increase in feelings of impending disaster.

"I figured. Didn't expect him to be so talkative though; seems like you Black Knights share more than a reputation after all."
Surlak buys a Wooden Shield, Morning Dew, antidote, and two rope nets [36 gold], and equips everything.
Massive backstory elaboration. I know too much detail can be limiting, but I had this in mind already, so...
When do skill uses recharge?

"Ah, so that Black Knight, Desmond... to think that if you idiots hadn't helped him get that terrible sword back. All that damage could have been averted."
"Oh please, any wizard could do the same thing with a very basic spell." Svenn retorted.
"Did he mention anything else about the sword, or his brother? Or what he was doing?" the man continued the conversation, not even acknowledging Svenn's reply.
"I don't know, why don't you find him and ask him yourself?!"
"We will, in due time. Now, the red-haired girl, she was a Black Knight too?"
"She didn't say it outright, but it was obvious. It's weird how rare it is to hear a Black Knight actually referring to themselves as such. Bunch of idiots."
"And after reuniting with her?"
"After they met up with the girl again, we went on to get additional supplies..."

If the others show no inclination to any other action, Natasha returns to the tavern, without buying a drink, and keeps an ear open for rumours. Often the most lucrative opportunities are the ones not proffered over the table.

With that covered, Surlak looks for a billboard and other points of interest, so they won't miss the overt jobs either, as well as to just get an impression of the town.

Gold: 60
Location: Hydegrim
Spoiler: Quests

[!] The Tome in Question: Retrieve the Book of Battle from the ruins north of Lethmond.
Reward: ???
You take a short walk around the city. Hydegrim's advantageous position between two imposing mountain walls, has led it to become a very popular pit-stop for adventurers heading north to the Spine. The city's architecture is of a very old style, the buildings are short and stout, cramped and made mostly of old cobblestone. Some of the newer sectors such as the market have some more modern looking wooden houses with roof tiling and stone supports.
The administrative sector is the best looking area in Hydegrim, the only area in the city where multi-storied buildings aren't a rare sight. This sector seems newly renovated, perhaps indicating of a recent power shift. The administrative sector is home to the new barracks - where the town guard is based.

You come across a job board, detailing various job offers from organizations in the city, as well as several wanted posters put here by the city guard.
Spoiler: Jobs
Magical Portal:
There is a strange magic portal in the basement of my home. I need someone to get rid of it for me. I do not know where it leads as I am too afraid to go in it. I will pay whoever manages to remove it. My home is at [address included]. Please help. -Nobia

Need a Powerful Warrior:
I am looking for a strong, relatively tall, male fighter of average build to take part in a fight against a fairly skilled opponent. Willing to pay very handsomely.
Come to [address included] at the market district to discuss this delicate matter properly. -Anonymous

Research Assistant Wanted:
I am looking for a skilled spellcaster, artificer or alchemist to assist me with my research into the crafting of uniquely enchanted artifacts. Past experience highly valued. I pay well with gold and arcane knowledge. Visit me at my home just off the market district for details. -Quaildas.

Package Delivery to Wakefield:
I have a very heavy package of rare metals that I would like delivered to the smithy in the village of Wakefield, a day's walk southwest of Hydegrim.
Talk to me at my shop for details and directions. - Tosold the Blacksmith

Looking for a Bodyguard:
I am meeting a client soon and I suspect they may attempt something. I need someone uninvolved and impartial to protect me with their life in case anything happens. Come to [address included] at the administrative district if you are up for the task. -Anonymous
Spoiler: Wanted Posters
Image Wanted: "Fury"

When you are done reading through the job board, Svenn interjects:
"Listen guys, you hired me show you the way to the ruin. If you're going to do any of this stuff, I'll probably sit it out at the tavern until you're ready to keep going north. I'm done with chasing bounty heads, at least for the near future."

Natalia leans against a nearby wall as the job offers and bounty heads are read out. Hydegrim is certainly an active place, which suits her fine.
"Bodyguard work? I could certainly do that. Helping out that blacksmith wouldn't be too bad either."
If no-one else has any input to the contrary, she pushes herself off the wall.
"I'm going to go and find out the details about the bodyguard job. You two should go see the blacksmith if you're up for it."

- Corner [1/1]: Surlak isolates an enemy, reducing their AC by 2 and preventing them from being affected by their allies' support abilities for 2 turns. This is a minor action. (70 AP)
- Hostage [1/1]: Upon hitting a cornered enemy with a spell, Surlak can choose to make the spell nonlethal and stun them if they'd otherwise die, threatening to finish them off.

(50 AP)

Surlak nods at Natalia's suggestion.
"Sure, I'll go ask him for the specifics. I'd want to take a look at that portal as well if I wasn't the only caster in our group..."

@Surlak, Erinelca:
You return to Tosold the Blacksmith and inquire about the delivery job.
"I have some metal bars and stones I need delivered to a colleague of mine in Wakefield. He goes by the name Hector. We're trying to create an alloy of common iron and the black rocks that can be found in the ruins in the Spine." He takes out a small, smooth, pitch black rock out of his apron pocket to show you. You have trouble realizing what you're looking at at first, as the material seems to swallow nearly all of the light that touches it. It's cold to the touch, hard, and quite heavy relative to its size.
"He has a high quality forge and melter and his equipment is better suited to it than mine, so I want them brought to him. It's quite a heavy package and will probably slow you down, but I need you to be able to deliver it safely and protect it from curious highwaymen or unnecessary attention. Hector will pay you a sum of 250 gold once it's delivered to him."
He then gives you directions to Wakefield. It's a small hamlet southwest of Hydegrim, built near the mountain side. Following the road should get you there in about a day (considering the weight of the package), according to Tosold's estimate.
Spoiler:

Wandering Steel: Deliver Blacksmith Tosold's package of metals and minerals to Hector's smithy in Wakefield.
Reward: 250 Gold

Will you accept this job?

@Natalia:

You make your way to the address in the job post and knock on the door. You're greeted by a skinny man who introduces himself as Usttas.
"You're here about the bodyguard work, right?" He looks you over.
"Yes, you look capable. That armor and that massive sword of yours, and I assume you can use it too. Perfect." He rubs his hands together.
"The deal is such - I will be meeting a client soon, he wants to buy a batch of my rare red-striped black lilies, the kind that grows around the Sable Wall. But you know how those junkies can be, you can't trust them not to go crazy violent, and this one happens to be a bigshot and is known for his bad temper. If things get violent, I need you to protect me and try to subdue him. I prefer if he stayed alive, he is a client after all, but my own life comes first."
He pauses and thinks for a moment.
"At any rate, I'll give you 10% of the deal, which comes up to about 120 gold. You look harsh enough that maybe just your presence there will deter him from trying anything."

Withering Trust: Protect Usttas' life during the transaction with his aggressive client.
Reward: 120 Gold

Will you accept this job?

@Natalia:
You accompany Usttas to a remote part of the city, in shady alley where the town guard doesn't patrol. A sickly sweet smell escapes from the box he's carrying, so you keep your distance a few paces away from him. Once you reach the spot where the exchange is meant to take place, the two of you wait for Usttas' client to show up.

After some waiting, three figures approach. A muscular, bold man with thick stubble accompanied by two young men, all three carry weapons.
"Dakim. I thought you were coming alone." Usttass says to the man.
Dakim replies: "I thought you were coming alone."
He gives you a nasty look. Usttass looks back at you, you can see the nervousness in his expression.
"Doesn't matter, I see how it is. Let's get this over with."
Usttass says: "Did you bring the money?"
"Of course." Dakim replies. One of his accomplices hands him a large sack of coins. Dakim clutches it. "Now show me the merchandise."
Usttas steps forward with the box and opens it to reveal the exotic flowers. Their stripes don't look red at all, they're more brown in color, and their leaves are very dry, almost like papyrus, you note to yourself.
Dakim doesn't say anything, he merely looks at the contents of the box for some moments, taking deep breaths as he observes it. Then he looks up and locks eyes with Usttas for a few short moments, before staring at the contents of the box for several more seconds... You can see his teeth clenching, and he then hands the sack of coins back to his ally and angrily smacks the box out of Usttas' hands. The box falls on the floor and the dry petals fall and scatter around.
"Just what the hell do you take me for, you piece of sh*t?!" He screams.
"Wait, it's not... no..." Usttass scurries back and looks back to you.
"Trying to sell me useless, withered product! Me! I'll show you what I do with swindlers like you." Dakim draws his sword. His two thugs do the same.
