"Then it's settled. We can head to the wizard's home tommorow morning."
You shake hands on it.
"My name is Desmond, by the way."
You introduce yourselves as well.

Desmond joined the party
Lore: Black Knight
Spoiler:
A warrior known as a Black Knight is quite different from what most people imagine when they hear the word "knight".
Knight are men of high birth, serving under a ruler. They often have their own estates and they are known to uphold chivalrous values. They are among the best trained warriors, thanks to their upbringing and vast resources.
Black Knights, on the other hand, are those men and women of common birth who have achieved a degree of martial prowess comparable to that of a trained knight. They often start out as vegabonds and outlaws before dedicating themselves to battle. Black Knights take pride in their status, often wearing distinct black armor so that others may know (and fear) what they are. While they are not neccecarily evil, black knights have a (frankly justified) reputation as troublemakers, and ultimately tend to be more opportunistic than chivalrous, with no qualms about using questionable means and dirty fighting to gain the upper hand and further their own goals.
You approach the group of adventurers. Their party consists of a young, red haired warrior, probably a mercenary of some kind, judging by his looks.
Another man with a strange shirt with some kind of floral pattern, he seems completely out of place here.
A well armed and armored orcish soldier stands at their side and watches you suspiciously as you approach.
A young, pale boy with a strange glow in his eyes is with them, he appears to be lost in thought and pays you no attention. As you walk towards them, Svenn says to you:
"I don't think I've ever seen an orc traveling with humans before.

When you adress their group, the red-haired warrior answers:
"There isn't even much to tell yet. We we hoping to reach the gates before nightfall, but that didn't work out well for us. It's a terrible situation that seems to happen to more and more people every night. A bandit ridden, dangerous road delays everyone, so they miss the curfew and end up sleeping under the night sky because of the very same bandits."
The man with the floral shirt says:
"Looks like it's our turn to experience the "Hydegrim Gate Inn". They say it's a rite of passage for every adventurer in the Spine."

Meanwhile, uninterested in your conversation, Desmond moves his gear and sits down at your campfire, next to Erinelca.
"Erinelca, right? That is a very high quality bow you have, I take it you must be an expert archer."

Erinelca was raised in a forest. When he was young his parents disappeared and left him a bow and some arrows. To survive he had to hunt and learn how to make arrows. Then the forest was set ablaze, causing Erinelca to want to become stronger to protect forests.
"Hmm? Oh no, I'm just okay with a bow; nothing special," Erinelca says, as he looks away from Desmond, embarrassed.

Surlak, Lv0 [00] Extortionist [Cover]
15/15 HP
Spellpoints: ■■
+1 DMG | +2 HIT | +2 AC
Weapon: Engraved Dagger [2-5 Dmg]
Armor: Auburn Cloak [1 AC, +1 to magic resistance checks]
Spoiler:
Inventory...[ 03/10 ]
- 3x Stinging Salve (restores 20 HP over 2 turns, but stuns for 1 turn)

Spellbook...[ 02/02 ]
- Void Collapse - Creates a nucleus of extreme gravity for a split second, ripping apart anyone standing too close for 1-8+WILx3 DMG. Particularly massive opponents resist some of the damage of this spell, while particularly small targets receive greater harm.
- Ripline - A thick chain of arcane matter grabs an enemy and attempts to drag them towards the caster, dealing 1-6+WILL damage. If the target fails a VIT check against the caster's INT, they are pulled forward: Targets in the cover row are dragged to the front, and targets in the front row fall down, losing their dodge +AC and becoming vulnerable to attacks until they can get up.
Active Abilities
- Corner [1/1]: Surlak isolates an enemy, reducing their AC by 2 and preventing them from being affected by their allies' support abilities for 2 turns. This is a minor action. (70 AP)
- Hostage [1/1]: Upon hitting a cornered enemy with a spell, Surlak can choose to make the spell nonlethal and stun them if they'd otherwise die, threatening to finish them off. The threat works much better if another cast of the spell could actually kill the target. (25 AP)
(If the spell doesn't actually connect, the skill isn't used.)

Mend [1/1] [curr: 2 turns]: Surlak ignores her wounds for just a moment, regaining up to 7 HP that are lost again after [INT] rounds. The expiration can't reduce health below 1. Overhealing during the effect will prevent the health loss. (70 AP)
Sustained Abilities
- Deterrence: Whenever an enemy dies, one random other enemy without a strong personal interest in the current battle may flee or surrender unless they pass a will test. Looking intimidating takes up a minor action every turn. (35 AP)
Passive Abilities
- Adaptible [curr: 2 AC, 1 dmg]: When running out of spell points, Surlak's WIL drops to zero and the points are distributed equally among AC and weapon damage (odd numbers increase AC first) for the remainder of the battle. (165 AP)

Conduit: Surlak can fuse additional energy into damaging spells, doing 50% less bonus damage for each spell point spent this way, min. 1 (if an example spell would do 8 damage, 4 conduit points would add 4+2+1+1). Overkill damage from the conduit bonus will affect another random hostile target. (50 AP)
Attributes:
STR: +2
DEX: -3
AGI: +2
VIT: -1
INT: +2
WIL: +3

Ability Points: 5

Scripts:
- target whoever seems the most important/could be killed this turn. preferrably target casters.
- corner the target, then spam vacuum on them, attack them when out of spell points

Description:

Surlak is wiry, fairly tall and around 30. She usually wears a red-brown coat. Her posture is upright and tense. Her face shows some battle scars with the biggest one running from her chin to her neck.

Surlak was raised to be a guardian by the Servants of the Wing, a sect notable for their belief that their religious duties are necessary for the continuity of the world.
She had always been obsessed with the thought that she was bound to meet a terrible end, and eventually she left her people, out of an impulse to face her apparent doom head-on as well as restlessness and curiosity.
Seeking to either steel herself so she could overcome her nightmares or just get her tormentous future over with, she took on various unpleasant and dangerous jobs, mostly as a bounty hunter or bodyguard, and made a habit of openly antagonizing people she disliked.
Despite her habit to seek out danger, Surlak prefers subduing her opponents to all-out combat, as having to kill and the very prospect of losing someone cause her great distress.
The more she enjoys life, the more she feels as though she's just delaying the inevitable.
"What a pain. Sounds like this curfew may be more trouble than it's worth. There's better measures...
I wish you luck and patience, whatever goal your travels may have."

Surlak returns to the bonfire to rest.
I wanna say that's a tourist, though it's probably not a tourist.
Desmond is a much better name than Goffgaff Gaffgarion.

Erinelca's emberrasment prompts Desmond to end the conversation by bidding him goodnight. He then stands up and begins pacing around slowly with one hand on his chin and the other hand folded under it. The man is obviously restless.

In lack of anythig else to do at this moment, you decide to rest until morning.

The party rests.

Dream Sequence: Erinelca
Spoiler:
A full moon hangs above the forest. Tonight the moon is thrice the usual size, you notice, but when you try to look at it directly, it appears to be the normal size. It is only when you look away, as if to spite you, that it suddenly seems large and covers a big portion of the otherwise starless night sky.
You walk carefully, noticing figures shifting in the shadows of the forest. Suddenly, you hear a terrifying howl.
You find yourself in a clearing in the woods, standing face to face with a muscular, massive black wolf. It stares at you intenty, baring its razor sharp fangs, appearing ready to pounce. You clutch your weapons, your hands shake uncontrolably.

Image
Dream Sequence: Surlak
Spoiler:
The warpriest pushes you aside.
"If you're not going to do it, then don't meddle. I'll handle this."
You hit the corridor wall harshly, though it feels painless.
The child gasps in terror as the priest swings a heavy mace directly at him, managing to step aside just barely before the mace crushes the floor it was standing on, sending the shattered floor tiles falling into the oblivion below.
"Damned brat." the hulking, armored priest mutters as the child steps away.
"Let me go!" the child shouts.

"I see how you're 'handling' this, alright. Stop acting big, you don't have the guts for this either. "
Surlak abruptly snarls through clenched teeth, making an effort not to raise her hand against the priest.
"Is this really worth it? Is anything worth it?
Tell me how anything is supposed to get worse from here! Tell me right now why we don't just let this whole thing go to hell!
We're pathetic. So pathetic! Just realize when you've hit a dead end and go down with dignity!"

She didn't remember why this was happening, but it seems like she was expected to know, and this seemed like the best of the possible, awful courses of action to take. Not good enough, but good enough was rarely a real thing.

Dream Sequence: Erinelca
Spoiler:
You will yourself you calm down and the shaking of your hands lessens.
The wolf stares at you with its unnervingly intelligent eyes. Its eyes suddenly appear to be those of a human.
It lounges at you.
...
You roll out of the way, bow at hand. Completing the roll, in a crouched position, you fire the bow at the wolf in a single, fluid motion... but... you miss your shot.
"Some archer you are..." You hear a voice, unable to tell where it's coming from. The wolf prepares to jump again.

Image
Dream Sequence: Surlak
Spoiler:
You see hesitation in the priest's eyes.
"We have to do this. It's for the greater good."
The child suddenly begins running towards the priest, shouting ferally. Before the two of you have a chance to react, the child jumps the priest, with inhuman agility, and bites down into his right leg, penetrating his teeth right through the priests armored leggings.
The priest loses his balance and falls on the floor with pain. "Aaaaah! Help me!" he shouts.
The light everywhere around you is slowly dimming...

I'm sorry. Seeing this for yourself makes it a lot easier."

It didn't. This hadn't become any less horrible.
She couldn't tell if this was bound to happen regardless or a result of the priest's hostility, but it was too late now. She wasn't keen on taking a chance to find out.
Surlak attempted to use a chain of magic to tear the eldritch child away from the priest, avoiding the direction of the abyss for now.
sorry for inconsistently writing in past tense, it just seems easier somehow

Dream Sequence: Erinelca
Spoiler:
Your entire body tenses up. You try to move your body away, to attack, anything, but you just stare at your hands helplessly as they are locked in place. The wolf circles around you and disappears.
You wake up. You feel an itchy, tingling sensation in your arms as you pull them from under your belly. Looks like you slept on your arms and woke up before they did.

Dream Sequence: Surlak
Spoiler:
You conjure a red, ethereal chain from the palm of your hand and effortlessly yank the child away from the priest and onto the stone floor. The priest seems to be in a pretty bad condition, with the bone of his shin showing through the wound. You look at the spot where the child was just a second ago, but he's gone. You suddenly feel a very sharp pain in the back of your neck...
You open your eyes. Your entire neck feels sore, looks like you twisted your head into an uncomfortable position while you slept.

The party has rested - Health and abilities restored.
Erinelca crafted 16 arrows.
Erinelca: +10 EXP
Surlak: +10 EXP

You get up. The sun has risen and the gate has opened, and twice as many guards now stand above the wall to the town.
The other group of adventurers is gone. Svenn is sitting near the faintly glowing coals of last night's campfire, sharpening his sword. Desmond is standing near him, helmet on and arms folded, axe hanging on his back, looking at the gate quietly.
"Mornin'." Svenn mutters when he notices the two of you are awake.

"I'm itching to get the matter of my brother's sword over with. Do you have anything to take care of in town or may we head straight to the wizard's home?"

"Ugh... good morning."
Bad dreams were neither noteworthy nor a pleasant conversation topic, so she didn't even mention last night.
"I think I'm set. Let's just get this done, we can shop all the more later."

Gold: 100
Location: Hydegrim, Wizard's Cottage

You agree to follow Desmond through the busting streets and into a secluded part of town. A stone cottage with a think, robust garden stands away from the other buildings.

"This is the wizard's home. He will probably try to summon some creatures to defend him, like last time. If he does, I need you to help me take care of them. At any rate, leave him to me."
Without so much as a word of warning, Desmond kicks in the door to the house and runs in, axe at the ready. You follow behind cautiously.
The first floor is a cozy looking, well furnished hall with rugs and a fireplace. Two stout stone pillars stand at the far end of the room, near the staircase that leads upstairs.
You hear a voice from upstairs shouting. "What's that noise?! Who dares enter my home?!"
"I'm here for my brother's sword!" Desmond shouts back.
"Not this again..."
You hear massive, heavy footsteps, and a tall figure, a large, armored skeleton made of metal and wood shambles its way down into the hall. A gray-haired, robed man follows after him, wielding a staff.
Image
"I see that you've brought accomplices this time. I'm not afraid."
"Give it back!"
"I already told you, I bought the sword, it is rightfully mine, and its unique enchantment is too powerful to be given to some low life like you. It needs to be researched by someone knowledgeable."
"This is the last thing I have from my brother, do you really think I care about your bullshit magic, or that you "bought" it from some grave-robbing scum?!"
"It's too good for you."

The wizard mutters an incantation, and a trio of small, sharp-clawed winged lizards are conjured. Looks like Desmond will need your assistance after all.

Surlak, Lv0 [10] Extortionist [Cover]
15/15 HP
Spellpoints:

- Corner [0/1]: Surlak isolates an enemy, reducing their AC by 2 and preventing them from being affected by their allies' support abilities for 2 turns. This is a minor action. (70 AP)
- Hostage [0/1]: Upon hitting a cornered enemy with a spell, Surlak can choose to make the spell nonlethal and stun them if they'd otherwise die, threatening to finish them off.

(50 AP)
"Try to hide behind your pets and toys all you want. The time has come to find another research subject, alright? If you don't give up now you'll lose more than just that sword and your door."
Even if Desmond said to leave the wizard to him, the chance to pull him in range and ignore his summons was too good to pass up on.
Use Corner+Ripline against the wizard.
I'm taking a wild guess assuming the "summoned" tag means that they'll be banished if the summoner is KO'd.

8 Damage! Wizard resisted the pull. Wizard is cornered.

You attempt to yank the wizard forward with your spell, but he somehow manages to hold his ground. He looks at you wide-eyed, and you give him a knowing wink.

Sven toggles ability Bowgunzerker
Svenn loses his Hit bonus
Svenn cannot dodge
Svenn draws a pair of crossbows...
==================================================
Sven sheaths his sword and draws a pair of hand crossbows, holding one is each hand. A menacing grin appears on his face as he picks his targets.

07
vs 02 + 06= 08

Svenn Reloads his crossbow.
Svenn Reloads his crossbow.
==================================================
Svenn begins firing at the flying creatures indiscriminatingly and with great speed. You can't quite wrap your mind around how he manages to fire and reload so quickly, but at the end of the volley one of the creatures falls to the ground with two bolts piercing its small body. It disappears in a bright glow, leaving the bolts on the floor.
==================================================
Wizard casts Multiply Spell: Ignite on Surlak and Erinelca. 4 DMG
Surlak is struck by a sudden burst of flame. 4 Damage.
15 + 02 = 17
vs 04 - 01 = 03
Success. Surlak is on fire! Surlak loses 2 HP.
Will check: 15 + 03 = 18
vs 01... Success!

Erinelca is struck by a sudden burst of flame. 4 Dmg.
17 + 02 = 19
vs 06 + 01 = 07
Success. Erinelca is on fire! Erinelca loses 2 HP.
Will check: 12 - 03 = 09
vs 19... Failed! Erinelca Panics.
==================================================
The wizard mutters an advanced incantation and swipes both hands in an outward arc. Not a second passes before two sudden eruptions of flame hit Surlak and Erinelca from thin air! Both catch aflame immediately.
Burning: Lose 10% of max HP each turn. I suggest rolling on the floor or finding some water.
Panicked: You lose your minor action and your +Hit and AC dodge bonuses. If you are panicking because you're on fire, putting out the fire will end this status effect as well.

==================================================
Desmond uses Vault Attack on Wizard. 8-12 DMG, 5 Hit
03 + 05 = 08
vs 07 + 03 = 10
Miss!
Desmond is now Flanking.

vs 13 + 03 = 16
Reroll.
08 + 05 = 13
vs 20 + 03 = 23
Miss...
==================================================
Desmond runs forward and uses his axe as a vaulting mechanism to propel himself into the air. He swipes his battleaxe at the wizard from the air, but the wizard manages to move out of the way just in time. Desmond lands behind him. After landing, he immediately turns around and with a shiny steel knuckleduster, throws a punch at the wizard, but somehow misses again...
Flanking is a separate combat row that allows anyone in it to attack the enemy cover directly. You can only fight from this combat row if you ambush your enemy in advance or use an ability or a spell to get you behind the enemy line.
==================================================
Guardian attacks Svenn. 6-10 DMG, 5 Hit
11 + 05 = 16
vs 05 + 00 = 05
Hit. 7 Damage.
==================================================
The guardian slugs Svenn with a heavy punch.
