Vicious spell - Mordekai's Spells can critically hit.

Depends on what your critical rate would be. For the standard FIN/2 (without weapon bonus), I think 80 AP is fine.
Note that it won't affect spells that are capable of scoring critical hits naturally (those may or may not exist), as well as sustained damage spells (because their damage is passive).

I like my players' characters best with cherry flavor, though.

I cannot think of any way out of that situation that wouldn't end in death or Aranym passing the despair event horizon.

If it helps your decision at all: I certainly wouldn't put you into a situation that could result in death this early in the game, especially considering the party hasn't even united yet.
