Ascent PnP (Press Start to Die!)

Post by Cimeries »

---[ Party ]------------------------------------------------------
HP: 17/17 | Front | Shade (Clonkinator)
HP: 35/35 | Front | Sir Oinkley (Ditto)
HP: 13/13 | Cover | Stul'p (Octagon)
HP: 21/21 | Cover | Arakath (Shellshocker)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Location: E 17 of Deucce Baaj's Dungeon - BF23
Time: Pfft, like you need that here.
Gold: 400.23
Image
Points of Interest:
1. EF 18 - Stairs up to BF22
2. EF 1 - Stairs down to BF24
3. H 14 - Pillar
4. K 8 - Door to Gaunt's Room
Story so far...
A map is provided within the Info spoiler. Some of these descriptions may be confusing if you don't look at it, as they are written assuming that you have.
The points of interest chart will help you get your bearings. The black areas are beyond your line of sight. The tile your party is occupying is listed under "Location", and so is the area you are in at the moment.

You descend into BF23 of the dungeon. Gaunt's quarters should be to the south-west of here, not far from the stairs to the next floor.
A pool of murky, filthy water spans in front of you. A sign next to the pool reads: "Please do not enter the pool, please do not throw coins into the pool (bills are fine, though. We also accept credit)" .
A sturdy wooden bridge extends across the pool to the other side, providing safe passage.
On the south end, parallel to the wall, there is a small patch of dry floor occupied by a pillar. From where you are standing, you catch an inscription engraved on the pillar, but it's too far to make out from this distance, and there seems to be no way to get closer to the pillar without getting wet.

Sir Oinkley: Wisdom - You can't help but notice that the letters on the sign you've just read become progressively smaller and more crowded as the sentence goes on, as if the writer ran out of room.

Shade, Lv01 [00] (Front)
17/17 HP
[3/3] Spark Wave
[3/3] Healing Stream
11 Atk | 107 Hit | 14 Crt
07 Def | 03 Res | 60 Avd
Rapier (5 Atk, 95 Hit, 10 Crt)
Red Coat (1 Def, 0 Res, 25 Avd)
Items (2/7):
- Medicine (Heals 10 HP)
- Medicine (Heals 10 HP)

Skills:
None

Spells:
[3] Spark Wave [115 AP]
[Base: 8 Atk, 100 Hit, 10 Crt]
[Curr: 14 Atk, 100 Hit, 10 Crt]
Hits all enemies with lightning, possibly also paralyzing them for 2 turns (25% chance per target).

[3] Healing Stream [120 AP]
[Base: 10 HP / 0 HP]
[Curr: 16 HP / 6 HP]
Focuses the curative power of the earth on an ally, healing it by [10 + INT] HP. Can also be aimed at the entire party, but only heals each target by [INT] HP when doing so.

Abilities:
- Counter [185 AP]
Shade is very skilled at fencing, knowing how to utilize every single chance to attack. If he successfully dodges a melee attack, he instantly counter-attacks with a melee attack of his own.

Traits:
- Swift [15 AP]
Shade is very agile and perceptive, making it rather easy for him to anticipate attacks and dodge them. Adds +5 to Avd.

Stats:
06 POW
06 INT
04 SKL
10 AGI
06 CON
03 WIS

Story:
Shade has a kinda rough past to show, so he eventually sought dispersal by becoming Deucce Baaj's employee, as fighting hero-wannabes and all that stuff sounded pretty cool. And it actually kinda is, if it wasn't for the fact that the payment just outright sucks and no-one likes the bad guys. So, after all these years, he finally decides to break free again and reclaim his freedom in an attempt to start a new life.

Shade is a tall man in his early twenties. He tends to be overly cynic and grumpy at times, but that's kinda to be expected if you're discontent with your employer. If he for once is in a good temper, however, he's actually a pretty nice and trustable guy, if somewhat arrogant.

Misc.:
AP left: 5
HP added: 1
Decided to put my spell uses more visibly out into the open.

Shade ignores the pillar and proceeds onwards, to Gaunt's quarters.
"Let's not waste our time here; after all, we don't want Gaunt to die of boredom, do we?"

Short post is short. Sorry.

Stul'p, Lvl 1 Drobbit Thief [Cover]
13/13 HP
0 XP | 0 AP

9 Atk | 110 Hit | 30 Crt (5 | 30 | 10*2)
03 Def | 04 Res | 52 Avd (1 | 2 | 30)

Theft [3/3]
Sudden Thrust [5/5]

Weapon: Newthunter's Claw (4 Atk, 80 Hit, 10 Crt)
Shield: Pot Cap, marked with the Groltu symbol (0 Def, 1 Res, 2 Avd)
Armor: Armadillo Leather Battlecape (2 Def, 1 Res, 20 Avd)
Inventory [5/7]:
+ Lockpick [3]: HIT chance of working. The Avd of the lock indicates its strength.
+ Newt Sandwich (heals 3 to 6 HP for Stul'p)
+ Sling [Atk 2| Hit 50| Crt 5] shoots small things
+ Loam Chunk (serves no practical purpose apart from filling Stul'ps inventory to prevent him from taking all loot for himself. What doesn't mean that he won't throw it away one day. And no, you can't build bridges with it. Not even if you are Clonkinator... :?)
+ Wooden Sword [Atk 0| Hit 60 |Crt 1] (serves no practical purpose apart from filling Stul'ps inventory to prevent him from taking all loot for himself. What doesn't mean that he won't throw it away one day.)

Rock Bag (for stones and other small things)
+ 10 sling stones [Atk 1 | Hit 20 | Crt 3]

Skills:

Theft [x/3] [110 AP]
Instead of attacking, Stul'p can steal a random item from an enemy, including equipped ones. Success chance equals that of an unarmed attack. Crt "scans" the enemy inventory and steals an item of choice.

Sudden Thrust [x/5] [120 AP]
Stul'p quickly switches to the front row, attacks from there and directly jumps back again. The drawback is, that while he thrusts, he suffers -10 Avd and his defense is reduced by 2.

Abilities:
Sneaky Strike [200 AP]
Stul'p's natural crit value is doubled. Also, his critical hits (of attacks, not of things like stealing) poison the enemy, because he is such a sneaky guy.

Traits:

Stats:
STR: 5
INT: 7 (2 Skills/Spells)
SKL: 10
AGI: 10
CON: 1
WIS: 2 (1 Ability)

Misc:
HP: +2 [20 AP]
Thefts: 0
Crits: 0
Kills: 0
Times Fainted: 0
:cookie: x1

Background:
Stulp grew up as a newt hunter in the hubbin village of Fruggle, happy despite never having heard of his mother. But he always knew that there was something... different about him. His face looked a bit... shady sometimes, and unlike other hubbins, he didn't really prefer the peace and quiet of the village but rather ran around as a wannabe rogue, stealing everything he could grab and later, also ambushing people, knocking them out, robbing them and saying horrible things into the ears of the unconscious. When dark elves attacked the village (half the hubbins being killed, half being enslaved and treated cruelly, and his father running away), he suddenly knew about his Drooven origin and decided that his actual name must be Stul'p znu Rilf... or so.
Since then, he roamed the lands, stealing things and causing nightmares everywhere. One day, he joined the cult of the Worshippers of the Blob of Groltu and became a stalwart stalwart of Groltunism.
His life was horribly changed when he was captured by thugs of Deucce Baaj, who used him as a doormat for his minions (no, not literally... well, okay, sometimes...) until the Lich Lord noticed the amount of stuff that his henchmen were missing and found the secret hideout of Stul'p. He realized the potential of the hubbin-droow and used him for emptying the pockets of the foolish intruders who dared entering his realm.
Skills:
Knee Kick[3/3] [90 AP]
Stul'p kicks against an enemy's knee, probably causing severe pain. This is a normal unarmed attack, but works from the back row and also causes a random reaction:
20%:Dazzles enemy for 3 turns
20%:Kicks enemy to the ground, stunning them for 2 turns
20%:nothing special happens
20%:certain crit
10%:Stul'p strains his leg and loses 2 HP
5%:permanently reduces enemy's Avd by 10
5%:instantly causes an attack from the kicked enemy

Traits (I can't have traits anymore, so this will count as an ability if possible and if I want it)
Gourmet [30 AP]
Stul'p can be healed a bit by eating so-called comestibles.

Stul'p looks around and thinks about the things that happened not exactly long before. He already decided some days ago, after meeting the other people of his new group, that stealing something from them was not worth the effort since he could possibly get much more and better equipment and money by teaming up with them, even if that could mean sharing the loot... the porc knight looked like he could turn him into stripes on the floor with a single swordstrike or shield slam, the strange battlemage seemed like he already had a bit experience with thieves and you couldn't steal from a ghost, could you?
But if he joined the "Avengers of the Souls", he would maybe even get an opportunity for stealing from that legendary Asidonhopo guy... the things in his shop looked costly.
Stul'p tries to take a look into the water, hoping to find some bills or other money he can grab, but he is too small to see what is behind the rail, and it also comes to his mind that he cannot swim very well (despite having grown up as a newt hunter) and doesn't know how deep the water is, and even though there could be some gold to snatch, but even though it glints, it is not worth drowning. Even though there is no such thing as "enough gold", he could possibly at least get enough for... everything you can imagine just by collecting everything in the dungeon. And he will possibly be able to get the money in the pool later...
Then he chooses to cross the bridge and to sneak to the door of that annoying Golem who actually seems to think that you could be an assassin without being related to any Hubbin or Droow, at least to see what was in the back part of the room, maybe some treasure?
"I agree. Let's go to the iron guy's room, okay? He could be useful later on, and we should try to make him join our team if we actually want to make that pesky undead implode... and grab his artefacts (and our souls if we should really need them).
And boredom shouldn't be the problem for Gaunt, I heard of guys like him surviving billion years of boredom."

I try to roleplay the greedy little jerk from the beginning... but at least, he is (Wrong) Genre Savvy.

Armor: Full Black Armor (5 Def, 0 Res, 0 Avd)
Stuff (1/7):
-Beef Sandwich (Restores 25 HP)

Skills:
-None

Abilities:
-Bash: Sir Oinkley can give up his minor action on a turn to unleash a bash with his shield on an enemy, dealing damage equal to that of an unarmed attack and having hit equal to a normal unarmed attack +20 minus the shield's hit penalty. (This only works if he has a shield equipped.) The Atk is boosted by 5. (220 AP)

-Guard: Sir Oinkley can guard one of his allies at a time, redirecting all fatal attacks aimed at them at him. (Attacks that would kill due to a critical do not count.) This lasts until Sir Oinkley reaches 0 HP or until he cancels guarding. (75 AP)

Stats:
Sir Oinkley snorts at the wimp of a thieving cur in a very piglike way. Did he have any honor at all? None of these fools were even near his level of ability in battle. These people would run in fear at the slightest sign of danger.

But not him. He, Sir Baconus Meatamillius Oinkley VII, had fought bravely for his position of black knight, the armor and sword that he wore and wielded were what he took from the opponent that he defeated in battle to gain his rank. He was a true warrior, one who would charge into battle even if one of his enemies planned to roast him with flames and eat him for dinner with barbecue sauce!

Sir Oinkley turned toward the thieving cur, reluctantly keeping himself from bashing his head in just for being a thieving cur. Did he mention that the thieving cur was a thieving cur? Oh yes, he did mention that the thieving cur was a thieving cur. "Let us march onward!" Sir Oinkley marches forward, standing at his full height.
"It only hurts when my squad won't f***ing heal me."

Arakath, Lv01 [00] (Cover)
21/21 HP
04 Atk | 109 Hit | 03 Crt
07 Def | 10 Res | 31 Avd
Dark Caster Staff (3 Atk, 100 Hit, 0 Crt)
Black Mist (0 Def, 3 Res, 10 Avd)
Spells:
[3/3] Dark Force [110 AP]
[Curr: 20 Atk, 109 Hit]
Arakath releases a dark force on a foe, dealing harsh magical damage. It deals [INTx2] DMG, with the hit chance being his base hit. It is impossible for this attack to be a critical hit. If under the influence of Dark Aura, the spell deals an extra [WIS] dmg to the target.

[3/3] Restoration [230 AP]
[Cur: +10 HP]
Arakath uses his magic to heal energy in all of his allies. The spell heals [INT] HP to each target. If one of the target's current HP is maximized, it is redirected to the party member with the least HP. If one of the targets in inflicted with a status ailment, it is also healed.

Abilities:
- Mist [60 AP]
[Cur: 03 Res, 10 Avd]
Arakath is a ghost and may not use any armor or shields because of this, but can upgrade his magical resistance through spending AP. DEF cannot be upgraded through this method.

- Dark Aura: [00 AP]
If Arakath's party outnumbers the opposing party, Arakath is under the influence of "Dark Aura" until the battle is over or his party becomes outnumbered. Doesn't work against bosses.

Traits:
- Ghost [+65 AP]
Arakath, being a ghost, is made of pure energy. Because of this, he may not communicate by speaking with his allies but instead communicates through telepathy. He also may not carry items or gold in any way, for he has nowhere to put it. Potions and medicines only have half as much effect as normal, and everytime he uses a medicine/potion, there is a 50% chance of failure. Though also being a ghost, he has the ability to pass through thin walls unhurt, and not make any sound when moving around (unless he is carrying a heavy weapon of some sort).

Stats:

Arakath silently continues, ignoring the pillar as well. He just decides to follow the rapier wielding man and not do anything beyond desire. His staff floats onwards, following Shade closely toward's Gaunt's quarters.

Mega slow internet for 2 days. >_<
Sorry. Had to make it quick.

"Hah... Honor is but a sorry excuse used by weaklings to hide their weakness. I do not care about such trivial things."
After yet another shrug of his shoulders, he adds:
"Think of me what you want; I couldn't care less about an oversized roast's opinion. All I want is to get out of this damned place. I offer you that we work together, giving you a chance to escape this place as well. If you don't plan on doing that, however, then get the hell out of my way."
He trims his coat a bit, then continues towards Gaunt's chamber.

You move ahead to Gaunt's qurters. As you turn around the corner, you are greeted by a large room opposite to Gaunt's quarters. The room is empty save for a number of boxes and crates of different sizes and what appears to be a colossal piano surrounded by the aforementioned containers. The piano looks quite dusty, it must have been sitting there for at least a few months.

You knock on Gaunt's door. For several moments you hear what you can only describe as the sound of storm wind blowing through a hollow metal tube, and then heavy mechanical footsteps. A small hatch on the door slides aside, revealing a pair of ominous looking glowing blue orbs of light peering at you from the darkness.
"Yes... who are you?", a hoarse voice mumbles.

You suddenly feel very uncomfortable about this whole thing. Maybe you should forget about it and get back to your assigned post?

And so they eventually proceed to ignore the giant piano and go to Gaunt's room as planned. The whole scene when they arrive at Gaunt's room is pretty unsettling, but Shade for one is already used to Gaunt's presence a bit, having met him several times before, and thus keeps his cool.
"Cut it out, Gaunt. It's us. The guys who are going to reclaim their souls from Deucce Baaj. We agreed to meet here today, remember? You agreed to oversee the execution of our plan and bring free snacks."

"No one takes me seriously anymore..."

The hatch closes, and the door opens. You see Gaunt's towering form slouching over you. The ceiling in this room is too low for him. You suddenly feel even more uncomfortable.

He steps back, inviting you to come in. You do so.

"Here are your snacks..." he mumbles, as he waves his hand over to the desk beside him. The desk is occupied by appetizer plates, but what is on the plates can hardly be called appetizing: bundles of gears, cogwheels, bolts and nails are lined artfully on them. Eating this can not be good for your health, no matter what the dungeon nurse said about your blood iron levels.
You decide that a drink will do just as fine, and reach for one of the cups on the desk, but you immediately put it back once you realize that in the cup is oil, and not just particularly old apple juice as you suspected at first.

Gaunt leans against the wall, chipping and cracking it slightly in the process.
"Tell me when you're done..." he sighs... "...I'll tell you of my plan."

You have some time to look around his room, and you see that it is in a very sad state. There are broken pieces of furniture and containers everywhere, with little else besides a dormant dusty furnace and several well-stocked bookshelves.

Shade is quite disappointed upon the sight of the 'snacks' Gaunt promised to bring. Well, he did bring them - it's just that Shade's and Gaunt's definition of tasty snacks seem to differ quite drastically.
"Uh... Eh... Oh, right. I just remembered that I'm on a diet. Guess I'll have to pass on these snacks."
After taking a look around Gaunt's room and noticing the bookshelves - "Huh, you like reading? You don't really look like the type." - he eventually adds: "Anyway, let's get this over with. So what's your grand plan?"

Gaunt shambles over to one of the shelves and pulls out a book. He flips around in it with his massive clumsy hands for a few moments, before finally stopping. He begins reading aloud:
"The reason behind the foundation of the dungeon of Deucce Baaj is a mystery, but it is widely believed to be a gauntlet constructed to protect a powerful artifact. The nature of the artifact is also unknown, but research suggests that it is one of the Revered Thirty, a legendary collection of artifacts that hold massive power equal to those of the gods."

He closes the book and puts it back in its place.
"That is an old book from the surface, its relevance appears questionable, but at least some of it is truth. I've seen the artifact transfered to its location when this dungeon was first built.
It's at the very bottom of this dungeon, on the 25th basement floor, and it is protected by fierce creatures from the quasi-elemental plane of fruity desserts."

He begins pacing around the room, shaking a few of his "snacks" off of their plates in the process.
"During one of my... scouting tips... yes, let's call it that... I found what I believe to be an elevator shaft that leads back to the first floor. And it's on this floor. That means that if we can get the artifact and make our way back to this floor, we can use the elevator to bring us directly to Deucce Baaj and kill him... Not that I actually think this will work, but I have nothing to lose either way."
