Re: The Videogame Thread

I finally got myself a steam account near the end of last year, and during the summer sale I grabbed quite a few things.

I had a blast playing Card City Nights because you can build your decks around the most ridiculous strategies, but mostly it's a giant Daniel Remar throwback- and in-joke-fest. I'm glad Ludosity is a thing.
I'm also very curious what Muri is like, which I'll grab as soon as a few of my cards are bought.

Rogue Legacy, aka Procedural Castlevania With Grinding, was really fun. (Flame Shield is obscenely broken against bosses though.)

Fez nails its atmosphere and the rotation gimmick is neat, but the actual platforming's a drag because dying is often better than surviving a fall and Gomez is a sluggish little man. I much prefer La Mulana's stiff jumping and knockback terror.

Electronic Super Joy is a precision platformer I enjoyed about as much as Super Meat Boy. The music's good, it's stylish (Canabalt meets Limbo... in a disco), checkpoints discourage ragequitting, and overall good level design outweighs some cheap shots. The humour is probably best described as obnoxious, but it worked for me. One important thing the game never tells you: You can air-jump directly after walking off an edge.
Don't bother with the sequel because it's awfully bugged, the stomp (which was half the fun) was removed and the level design is bland. It also takes 30 minutes, though I wouldn't have minded if it was as good as any world of the first game.

Someone gifted me Transistor and I really want to play it, but it just crashes instantly.

I'm really interested in Shovel Knight, but I should really hold back after the summer sale.

I finally got the following:
-Mass Effect 1 and 2 (first one is a bog-standard RPG focused on shooting, second one is more shooter-based with more messed-up logic and more movie-style setpieces)
-Bioshock Infinite (haven't played it yet)
-Hitman: Absolution (blah blah assassin stuff; more movie-style than earlier games, and simultaneously easier and harder than earlier games)
-Kill The Bad Guy (Hitman meets physics sandbox meets Bloody Hilarious). Indie Humble Bundle FTW!
-A bunch of indie games I haven't played much.

A friend bought me Shovel Knight and it's absolutely fantastic: great proof of what Kickstarter can do, much like Risk of Rain.

I've been having a bit too much fun with Dungeons of Dredmor because I'm a huge sucker for rampant multiclassing. Then I noticed that corrupted equipment seems to slowly, sneakily, permanently drain your stats, and how easily you can miss items being corrupted between all the log spam. If you could at least scroll your log it would be barely tolerable, but this way it ruins the entire game.

MURI is a wonderful faux-DOS game, but since you're probably looking for something for your actual DOS device: I've heard good things about Commander Keen and Turrican.

Hitman: Absolution is a psychopathic, bloodthirsty game for psychopathic, bloodthirsty people and you should play it.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is best game, no glitches whatsoever.
(died right as boss cutscene started, then reentered boss door without Thief Girl)

It's been awhile since I checked in. Uhh....Well, I can safely say that Space Engineers is really damn cool. Go get it once it goes on sale.

Egoraptor said it was good, it must be true.

Hyper Light Drifter is almost upon us, guys.
And Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is actually fairly decent from what little I played of it. Better than 2.

I've spent most of my free time this week building ever-bigger ships and contraptions. Just yesterday I put the finishing touches on my PBTODD:

A few things.
1. StarMade is essentially Minecraft in space, complete with a warp drive thingy, friction in space, the ability to visit planets (each planet has a significant amount of gravity), pirates, asteroids, abandoned stations, and an incredibly massive procedurally-generated universe. It's free for now.
2. Bioshock Infinite isn't a standard Bioshocky game by any standard, but it's still a lot of fun and plasmids...sorry, "tonics"...are a big part of the gameplay. If anything seems unexplained, then "Burial at Sea" should help.
3. Grabbed GTAV on the PS3. It's not 100% to my liking but still a great game.
