Re: The totally bestest thread ever (for random stuff)
Been having a lot of fun with this old DOS machine; so far I've tested a load of 2D/isometric games, a few really old games (from the days when monitors could only do monochrome with cyan and magenta), Doom, and even Quake (though the framerate is a little bit inconsistent at times, sometimes dropping to 20ish FPS if there's an explosion or something), though Ignition is a bit much for it (10-15 FPS at low settings). Surprisingly, the original Grand Theft Auto stays around 30 FPS at all times. Any ideas/requests?
Current hardware:
Motherboard: Not sure, I'll recheck it later. Original.
CPU: AMD-K5-PR166. Original.
RAM: 65 MB, I think. Original.
Video card: That's on my to-check list. Outputs to VGA only. Original.
Audio card: Yamaha YMF-Y24F with no working drivers. Found in a box in our closet.
Mouse: "Q500 Digital", originally NIB. Bought off Amazon.
Storage: One 500ish MB hard drive (original), one Sony CD-ROM drive (thanks for keeping legitimately DOS-compatible drivers on your servers, Sony!), one floppy drive (original).

I'd say try a Linux distro, but I dunno if that computer's just too old now (I used Debian on a similar computer from 2003 to ~2008).

The whole computer was basically built AROUND DOS 6.22, I don't think it can even handle Windows 95.

I would imagine it could do at least Windows 95, maybe Windows 98.

Seriously?...Eh, I'll give it a shot if/when I get a hard drive compatible with Win95 (I only bring this up because I tried to use a not-old-as-DOS hard drive, and I couldn't get any formatted partitions to do anything at all, including reformat).penguinflyer5234 wrote:I would imagine it could do at least Windows 95, maybe Windows 98.

I really hope that the designers return eventually; I actually really enjoyed play‐testing.

Who are "the designers"?Seth wrote:I really hope that the designers return eventually; I actually really enjoyed play‐testing.

Sidenote, I got the DOS machine set up with a 40GB hard drive (only 4 gigs usable at the moment), installed Win95, and have been using it every so often without issue. It's capable of playing Carmageddon at medium detail and full frames. Any suggestions?
Sidenote sidenote: I have a WinXP machine laying around, capable of playing NFS Hot Pursuit 2 at a shameful framerate. Also capable of playing NFS Porsche Unleashed and more lightweight games flawlessly. Suggestions?

Why did I suddenly imagine you wearing a tinfoil hat? I mean, that sounded kinda conspiracy theoretic to me for some reason...Maxaxle wrote:Who are "the designers"?Seth wrote:I really hope that the designers return eventually; I actually really enjoyed play‐testing.

I didn't mean it like that, I was just asking who the designers were.woodmouse wrote:Why did I suddenly imagine you wearing a tinfoil hat? Sidenote: I'm reminded of Receiver.

Wait, seriously!?...I've been too busy with other stuff to check this thread as often as I should, btw.woodmouse wrote:Omgomgomgomgomgomgomg Zefz is still alive bmpebdmaprogölm,sdlf,söldfsmödmfödfösgaäfmägdfgd

Re: The totally bestest thread ever (for random stuff)
I dreamt about Egoboo for the first time in seasons. Some parts that I remember are killing a tough grub bug with a flame‐throwing spell, and running around a crowd of grub bugs, hitting them with the claw used by my solider with strangely low health.
I desired to state that here, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the project updated!
Some nice balance in an otherwise dreadful week for me.

It's nice to hear from you after all this time!
I remember using the Burning Hands spell a lot because it was the only thing my elf could afford for quite some time. Had to get way too close for someone with 2 or 3 HP.

Re: The totally bestest thread ever (for random stuff)
It's been so long since I've actually played the game. I might try to track down an old distro that I liked for a bit of a nostalgia trip.

Re: The totally bestest thread ever (for random stuff)
I tried to play a recent one a while ago, but I got one with broken hitboxes where it was very difficult to damage anything.
The first one I played, which I had discovered on some German computer magazine CD, was very stable, except for the dealbreaking fact that Sand Palace was already impossible to complete.
Think it was something like 2.6.8 or 2.7.4.
I guess cheating to skip the sand palace would be the best option.
