Re: Anime, Manga, whatever else
Is it dark and gritty like papa likes it?

Re: Anime, Manga, whatever else
It's a seinen (as in, adult anime), everybody smokes and it's pretty much the best-written anime I've ever watched.

Yarrr, acquisition of booty in progress.
Anything else?
Anything else?

- Hm, have you watched Code Geass? It's somewhat comparable to Deathnote. And it's awesome. Even though it has mechas. I don't like mechas. But Lelouch is so ridiculously awesome that Code Geass is among the best anime I have ever watched regardless.Cimeries wrote:Something like Darker Than Black / Deathnote / Hellsing would be preferable.
- Shiki is decent if you like vampires, though it needs quite some time to get off the ground.
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, obviously, if you haven't watched it yet.
- Umineko no Naku Koro ni, if you liked Higurashi. Higurashi is better, but Umineko is still decent.
- Fullmetal Alchemist can be pretty dark at times, and is excellent all around.
- Soul Eater is also good, though the anime becomes kinda so-so towards the end. It's also definitely Shonen rather than Seinen, but if you like dark-ish action (with lots of fun thrown in), it's absolutely worth watching.
- Katanagatari isn't exactly dark (most of the time), but excellent nonetheless. I definitely recommend it if you like action, with some funny and some dark moments thrown in. It also has an interesting art style not commonly seen in other anime.
- And, behold, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is about the darkest magical girl anime you'll find. It's not that dark in comparison to some other stuff around here, but definitely a very enjoyable "Take that!" to your standard magical girl anime. The first two episodes look fairly standard-ish, but watch it until the end of the third episode at the very least before deciding whether you want to continue watching it. I for one enjoyed it.

Uh, I enjoyed Umineko more than Higurashi. The Umineko anime is definitely better, and DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! did a lot better on it than they did Higurashi. Umineko is more about the mystery, and I really like the tone. Not to mention that there are no watermelon-heads.

To each their own, I guess.
Maria is annoying as heck, though.

Also, second recommendation on Code Geass. I haven't seen all of it yet, but what I have seen is awesome.

FYI, this is what goes on in my head when I'm exposed to the phrase "Cowboy Bebop":

Watch it English dubbed, by the way, it's one of the few anime where the dub largely exceeds the sub in terms of awesomeness.

Shade, I would highly suggest you check out the two as-of-yet released episodes of the Higurashi 10th Anniversary OVA.
The second especially if you're still sticking with, and I quote:

I already did. The second one was okay, but the first one... Eh, I'm not very fond of "Fanservice". Especially not of this kind.Agent of Dread wrote:Shade, I would highly suggest you check out the two as-of-yet released episodes of the Higurashi 10th Anniversary OVA.

I don't like fanservice when the character is too innocent/not written to be a Ms. Fanservice.
However I found both episodes rather amusing, and DEEN finally getting the animation and drawing right gets A+s in my books.
