Awesome VGM Thread

Post by Ditto »

So, around an hour ago, I was having fun beating the last levels of a pretty fun wii game, when I suddenly realized the blasphemy that this awesome song was absolutely not used in any levels in it, despite it supposedly being a sequel to a sequel of it. At this point I turned off the game in fury, looked up the song, and listened to every remake made of it for nearly half an hour.

But, anyway, after that outburst, I had an idea: Why not make a thread to write down favorite VGMs and compile them into a post instead of spreading them across the forum in posts and PnPs and stuff? So, voila.

Scroll through these libraries for excellent soundtracks of all sorts! :teach:

Doom E1M8.
This riff practically defines my childhood. It's badass, dark, and has a feel of impending disaster. Also a hell of fun to play on the guitar.
Original version.
Refined version
Heavy Metal cover

Kinda Green from Iji.

Propaganda from Beyond Good and Evil

Velvetopia Mini Boss and Theme tracks from Psychonauts.

Kraid's Lair from Metroid:
Original
GBA version.
My favorite adaptation.

MDK2 as a whole is a game full of awesome music. Best tracks in my opinion are the first three and Kurt's theme (#12). All are definitely worth a good listen.

Live A Live for the SNES, awesome music all around, especially the combat tracks:

The Painkiller OST is really great if you like heavy and distortion guitars:

Also, I've never played Heavy Distortion, but a game that pulls off something like this, deserves a mention.

Are you referring to Donkey Kong Country Returns by any chance? :P

Dude. You don't put quotation marks into an url tag. That doesn't work.

Now, I could post millions of links to ridiculously awesome VGM (especially from Fire Emblem), but most of those are probably just my personal favorites. Let me try to pick out some that stand out as really awesome:

- Prophetic (Tetrisphere, N64)
Consider that this was the title theme of an N64 game. Yes, N64. Mind = blown. And that's just one track. People often seem to like Extol best, but the game's entire soundtrack is epic, really.

- The Oracle (Seiken Densetsu 2, SNES)
The game's also known as Secret of Mana. This is the theme to the semi-final boss of the game, and damn, it suits well. Just a shame that most of the game's boss fights are totally anticlimatic because magic is so ridiculously broken in this game, and this boss is no exception. But anyway, rarely have I heard a boss theme as dark and menacing as this one. Pure awesomeness, really.

- Blazing Emperor Gulcasa Sortie! (Yggdra Union - We'll never fight alone, GBA)
The theme to one of the major bosses in a ridiculously difficult GBA game that I've yet to beat. I can't really say much about it, other than that it's really epic, and very fittingly gives you the feel that you're f*cked. And damn right you are if you have to face this guy. He's so hard to beat, it isn't even funny. Doesn't help that he's got an instant death attack.

- Castle Theme (Super Mario World, SNES)
It may not stand out much to others, but honestly, this must be the best castle theme in the entire series (and even NSMB's and NSMBWii's are pretty damn great, mind you); it's dark and eerie, but also mysterious. Perfect castle theme. Oh, and you gotta hear the sped up version that you get when you're running out of time (and that does not seem to exist on YT, which is an enormous shame).

Um... wow. Alright, this filled up 1000x faster than I thought it was going to.

Clonks: Oh yes it is. :D

I'm kind of doubting that putting them into a list is a good idea, though, after actually copying a few URLs. (a thread is probably enough, methinks.)

Now that I start thinking... Grandia. All the music in it is epic, but particularly this:

Also, Croc (both 1 and 2) have some awesome ones.

Lol, I just re-read my comment about E1M8. I didn't mean that my childhood was badass, dark and disastrous, just that I grew up on the game and have a lot of vivid memories of playing that stage, running away from Hell Barons (that was before I learned to strafe and run, now I can punch the buggers to death xD), exploring the hallways, discovering that the map is actually a friggin' Pentagram, and getting tossed into oblivion by a mysterious portal.
Fun times.

E1M8 sounds awesome indeed.

Speaking of Kinda Green:
Backwards it sounds like Tasen elevator music or something
I also love the music of HeroCore:
Boss theme
Sector 8 theme
Sector 10 theme
Final boss
A worthy soundtrack for a Remar game.
And, of course Hero 3D.

Some wonderful Quintessence BGM tracks:
To Realize (Piano) [main theme]
Beyond Mountain's Reach [boss battle?]
A Time Long Past [awww... ;_;]

Exit Fate also has awesome music, even though it consists merely of songs from soundtracks of other RPGs.
Epic: Commandos.mp3
Sounds like Fun(damentalism): Vampire (from an apparently epic game called Suikoden, which I definitely have to play one day.)
Sort of cheesy, but I admittedly like it: Reminiscence (from Suikoden as well)
Badass: Clint

The Egoboo main theme and castle theme also deserve being mentioned here. :D

Oh, right. Can't forget Cave Story after all. And have some more of the other stuff as well while I'm on it.

Eyes of Flame (Cave Story, PC)
I guess everyone here has played this game and thus knows, but this theme acts as the big boss theme throughout the game. 8-Bit goodness at its finest.

The Power of One (Eternal Daughter, PC)
Boss theme of a really hard Metroidvania-style game. Note that this seems to be an arranged version, but I shall be damned if I can find the original version anywhere on YT.

Burning Ambition (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, NGC)
This tune plays in various cutscenes involving the game's Big Bad, the Mad King Ashnard. In case you couldn't guess it already by hearing this tune, Ashnard is evil. And mad.

The Sacrifice (1) (Seiken Densetsu 3, SNES)
This tune plays during the dialogue right before the final boss fight, regardless of which final boss you actually fight. Dark. Evil. But most importantly, it gives a feeling of hopelessness, as if you're really screwed. I can hardly imagine a better pre-final-boss theme.

Moonsong - Cave Story, PC
Oppression - Cave Story, PC
You can't forget these gems. Eyes of Flame is my less favourite Boss Theme, to be honest.

We Are the Robots - Megaman 9, ???
This makes me wish I'd played this game. Enough said.

I don't know if I'd choose that song from path of radiance... then again, it was filled with a lot of great songs. My personal favorite is actually this. (Yes, I can use URLs right, Clonks.) A lot of people seem to like the black knight boss theme, but I really don't see why.

Kinda green was... AWESOME. I really need to play Iji.

Another favorite theme of mine from metal gear solid III, even though I've never actually played the game (and really should)-
Snake Eater
"It only hurts when my squad won't f***ing heal me."

Just like "3 Cans Later". And "For Stronger Bones". And "Seven Four". And "Tor". And...
:D
And the Asha theme has funny lyrics. Who had thought that he talks about beer and nothing else the entire time...
I just don't understand why stuff like "LightStroke" or "Doom" is declared as songs.

They aren't. They just are used as songs to erase any other song that was playing before them, since the game maker engine isn't capable of playing two different songs at the same time.
Or so I'd guess. It works similarly with the RPG Maker though, which I've got plenty of experience with, so I'm pretty sure it works like that.

It was basically so Remar could use the one function to get any of them going at a given point, I believe.

Also, yeah. "This is the final battle... for Peroni & Son."
