Yeah, a fried graphics card just mean you can't turn the machine on, but unless the card explodes or something, the files on your drive should be safe.

If these files are so important to you that you react so harshly to them being threatened, you could buy a cheap portable HD with like 500 GB (I guess should be enough?) and keep a copy of the entire folder structure on it in case shit hits the fan. That way you have insurance in case your computer goes full potato mode on you.

Yeah, I have a lot of similar stuff done, and it's easy to do that kinda things so I'll send you whatever in a PM and yeah.
Please do! I've been itching to collaborate with someone who can make beats. Using obscure free ones works for me, but it's a little jarring when I hear the beats in other places or used by other people once I've written a song with them... I'd much rather work with someone I know and make something unique.

It's amazing how out-of-touch I've gotten with all of you. I've been busy, sure, but that's no excuse; I can easily write off an entire night for Warframe.

Anyway. Looks like I might have a job change ahead of me, and although it'd eat up even more of my time, it would also put me back in a "normal" rhythm and keep my head clear on the weekends.

If you want to keep in touch with me on a somewhat-regular basis, try my Discord chat: https://discord.gg/Ss7fUyw

It stopped working again, and this time my dad thinks it's the power thingy, so he's getting a new one as soon as he can but my computer is pretty old and rare so it might take a while, probably at least a week or so.

I have a 1TB external hard drive, which still has 300GB left, but it's impossible to copy the files onto it since the computer itself won't stay on. Also, it's possible for the external hard drive to break in one of the weird mini-electricity cuts that happen as well, so it would be pretty useless. For what it's worth, though, the night my computer originally stopped working, there was a series of big blackouts in Helsinki (which for some reason seem to have been ignored by the media as even happening (probably because they happened mostly in the poorer eastern parts of the city?)) and it obviously affected others as well. Blackouts are really rare here, so it's not surprising that them doing actual damage isn't acknowledged, I guess... but small ones do happen quite often, I think they're limited to our house or maybe even just our apartment...

Sorry, I really hope I'll be able to, but I don't want to take any risks with my mum's computer so I won't be able to send you anything right now for like a week at least, possibly never (if the external hard drive broke too...) but if I can, I'll do it as soon as I can.

Ah, sounds like your dad is right and your power supply is all screwed up from power outages. I've had the same problem in my computer too. Sometimes in the winter we would have small 1-3 minute power outages here and there and those sudden drops really mess with the power supply on a PC and can fry other components too.
I had to replace a power supply and a graphics card because of that... Actually now that I think about it this sounds eerily similar to what you're experiencing.

Once your power supply is replaced, you could plug your PC into a surge protector or a UPS unit. That should help your PC power supply live a long happy life.

Oh I've been there too. Entire evenings wasted doing ninja stuff at robots. Was fun but I had to put a plug in that.

Talking over Discord is actually a really neat thing.
Woody, once you get your PC back, we could chat over there re: music and stuff. I want to run some lyrics by you before I commit to recording (since the subject may be... not cool with you I guess).

Discord is great, yeah. My main group of dumbasses migrated from Skype a while back and it's been a continuously more liberating experience ever since.

Unfortunately, that turned out to be impossible; the computer is so fucking rare to begin with that compatible power supplies are not manufactured anymore and used ones to order from the US cost like 250$... and since no one I know and apparently no one my dad knows has ever ordered anything from the US, and American businesses are considered so untrustworthy that ordering anything from them at least was at some point warned in a bank-related thing I had to fill once as basically voiding them of any responsibility if their customers (eg. I) got scammed or something. Rich people don't have this problem, of course, but we're literally in like the bottom 10% by Finnish standards, which probably by international standards puts us in the top 10% and thus by le social justice standards voids our right to complain about shit. My right to complain is especially voided since I'm officially mentally ill, which is not seen as a real thing by SJWs... not that I care about what SJWs think, but well, they are impossible to avoid at this point... and they'd happily take away my right to use the internet or make music or whatever if they were able to...
Cimeries wrote:
Woody, once you get your PC back

...and since there's no way I'm ever getting it back, or any actual proper PC again (only a laptop), well... I mean, all the things I like doing are now impossible for at least until I can get a laptop, but even then I won't be able to make music or anything again unless my dad manages to miraculously get the hard drive to work properly on the laptop with Windows 7; this would require the drive names or whatever to be the same as they were (C being C, D being D, etc.), and for everything that works on XP to work on 7... :? He said he's trying to find computer experts to ask for help on that, but basically said flat out that it's simply impossible as far as he knows because the operating system is always on C and the C of that hard drive becomes D if it's attached to a different computer, since it already has a C drive with the operating system, so... eh... the only way around that would be to reinstall every software, but there's no guarantee that anything would work since it's a different operating system, and I know for a fact that some software I use simply doesn't work on anything newer than XP because they're old shit that are no longer even supported or available, etc. Why does this shit have to be so complicated!? :x

People just ten years ago couldn't have understood this, and would laugh at me for being so dependent on a fucking computer, and most still would if they're ten years older than me. I'm not sure if the advancement and spread of technology into people's daily lives has been so aggressively anti-socialising anywhere else in the world as it has in Finland; Japan, maybe, but at least they have public (and pubic XDDDD ...I couldn't resist the pun...) uses for everything new that connect people to at least the thought of being social, even if it's not really being social. Here, it's the exact opposite... people depend on computers and more recently smartphones for every kind of social interaction with each other so that they can escape even the illusion of having to be social, when in reality all they do online is use social media... it's gotten to the point where social media is the new scapegoat for kids' anti-social behaviour, and the anti-social and antisocial shit on social media is perceived as a threat for being too social.

...and the fact that I'm not really into social media, and mostly used by computer to make music makes me even more of a freak. I mean, as big as electronic music is, the idea of being a DIY musician is pretty alien in Finland (except for punk and black metal, but that's different as a whole and most punk and especially black metal musicians find the use of computers in music alien, so...), so...
Cimeries wrote:

All subjects are cool, I guess, especially now.

I wonder if people before the invention of computers felt depressed as fuck all the time, only waiting for interesting shit on TV; I mean, right now one of the few things that makes me want to keep living is so I can watch Ville Haapasalo's next travel series that begins on the 26th; if you don't know who he is, he's an actor/traveller/TV personality/whatever and does an "X in 30 days" travel series, and the next one is Altai. ALTAI! :D

Okay, so, I have a laptop with Windows 7 now. It's alright, I guess, although I'll never stop missing XP because 7 is apparently total shit when it comes to unicode fonts and shit, and it loads all the files in a folder every single time instead of just the first time, so it takes forever to open big folders, and apparently there's nothing that can be done about it... on top of that, I now have confirmation that my right ear is fucked, not my left like I had always thought. Also, my teeth keep breaking and fillings come off, I still can't sleep well, etc. and everything is shit. Oh well.

I have no idea what the "server location" is about, but it automatically goes to Russia. Makes sense, I guess, from a geographical point of view, but it confuses me how there are four different ones for the US and two for Europe (central and western), but no northern or eastern Europe. Eh, it probably doesn't matter, but well; at least it doesn't have a "Scandinavia" one that Finland would be grouped into, that'd be annoying as hell. :P

So, anyway, I filled the things and... https://discord.gg/JCkGP77

Hey y'all. I hope you've been doing well. Sorry to say hi on kind of a sour note.

"Nope" sums up my initial reaction adequately. Not "disowning" him/her or anything, I'm just disappointed that he became part of a regressive subculture.

Yeah, the regressiveness is the worst part. Him/her/them/???? intentionally disregarding history and implying that I'm as much to blame for slavery as any white American is actually worrying; he/she/they/???? didn't explicitly say anything about slavery AFAICR but linked to some video or article or something that explained how white people having dreads is oppressive because of slavery. Even if that wasn't total bullshit by common sense, it wouldn't make sense because, like, I'm Finnish so my ancestors probably were slaves to Swedes and/or Russians. Obviously, blaming people for the things their ancestors did is pointless and stupid, but it's one of the two sides to nationalism (although ironically people who oppose nationalism tend to take it much farther...) and unfortunately people are like "yo momma so fat" by nature, so disagreements often can't be resolved without the intervention of a third party, and if that third party is a condescending shit without any actual understanding of what the conflict is all about... well...

And I mean, if "you're white, so you're evil" was a religiopolitical argument (original sin, predestination and inheritance of the sins of a father to his son or whatever combined with a politicalised americentric concept of race), it would be at least partially excusable as not being a personal choice to be ignorant as much as it would be the result of indoctrination. Even though it would still be ignorant, at least it would be part of a bigger picture of ignorance, but for someone that has abandoned organised religion for exactly the reason that it's ignorant, it's really hypocritical, backwards and ignorant to throw around accusations like that even if they're disguised in the form of education and correction of social injustices; I mean, I'd actually say it's somewhat worse because, you know, it's regressive...

I'm probably likely representing that "regressive subculture" too, depending on what you mean. Hi.

"You're personally to blame for slavery" is a nonsensical distortion, and I'm sure that the nonsense came from a misunderstanding rather something that Purple believes. I know she's cooler than that.
I'm getting familiar with the attitudes of people who take it personally when someone criticizes racism, so i think I see where you're coming from. A lot of anti-discriminatory discourse seems to be preaching to the choir, and upsetting to people who aren't familiar with the arguments yet.

Cultural appropriation isn't a problem because you're personally responsible for slavery.
It's a problem because there's a messed up power dynamic caused by stuff that came before you. Things from black cultures, native cultures etc, etc aren't as respected and well-known in white eurocentric society as things from that white, eurocentric mainstream.
So the original context of those things tends to be forgotten as they're used by white people who're not actually drawing on that context, appropriating stuff doesn't increase the acceptance of its original owners, and sometimes the use as a fashion accessory completely contradicts the traditional purpose.

If you wear dreadlocks in a country where black people are discriminated against for wearing dreadlocks, that's a display of missing solidarity. I don't know if that's happening in Finland, but Europe tends to be pretty damn racist and treat immigrants like shit, so my bet is yes.
In the US case, it's pretty infuriating if some white californian student gets congratulated for her dreadlocks while black people get denied employment for looking "unprofessional" and kids get suspended from school for not getting their hair chemically treated or shaved.
(from what I know, dreadlocks on white people are kind of tacky too because the actual way of making them relies on a hair type that's specific to black people, and is actually kind of utilitarian.)
In my world view, being contrarian just for the sake of it is selfish. It's satisfying, you may feel like you're being a cool iconoclast, but it can be just as complacent and habitual as blind traditionalism. "Not edgy enough" isn't a great reason to completely disregard someone's world view.

Context makes things good or bad, and saying you should heed that context isn't a personal accusation.
Pushing someone off a cliff is worse than jostling someone on flat terrain. Metaphors like this are awkward because they stand in for much more complex situations, but I think you get the point.
Being white doesn't make you or me evil, it just makes it harder for us to understand the problems black people face and avoid stepping on toes. And it gives us opportunities to take advantage of racism, and it's our responsibility to reject those.

I understand wanting to be free and not restricted by arbitrary norms. But I believe that knowing larger-scale ramifications is essential to making informed decisions and those are essential to freedom.

(sorry for responding to an old-ish controversial post, but I didn't see this earlier, 2 months don't seem like that much to me in a dead forum, and I care about the topic because it's sad to me that that bridge got burned.
I'm kind of busy and I don't tend to be comprehensive in my statements, but I wanted to try my best at clearing this up.)

woodmouse wrote:
...and I actually apologised for joking on twitter that I'd get dreads and wear a shirt that says "I'm trans-fat", after which Purple continued to educate me on why it's racist for white people to have dreads. What the fuck, right? If I could do so without having to fear the consequences, I'd take back every apology and tell him/her/them/???? to sit on a garden gnome, but the risk of becoming the target of an internationally organised movement that has demonstrated the will and capability to ruin people's lives... well... :?

There's no "SJW conspiracy", and I know Purple wouldn't publicly humiliate and dogpile you. There's a lot of misguided, scary shit going on, there's immature, overzealous kids who don't know what's constructive and randomly lash out at what they see as bad. The structure of social media encourages some awful patterns, but I'm pretty sure you weren't at risk of that happening to you.

octagon wrote:

Depends. If you can hold a discussion without derailing it or resorting to strawmen, then I would guess that you aren't. :)

octagon wrote:

See, this example doesn't work when one group does the denying and another unrelated group does the praise.
Can you show me an example of a place of business willing to hire a dreadlock-wearing white person but not a dreadlock-wearing black person? Some businesses will not hire people with dreadlocks or even long hair period, that's true...
But I don't think you can find one legitimate business or organization that only applies their "dress code" rules to black people (or any group) regardless of specifics.

As an aside, dreadlocks were worn by all kinds of racial groups at one point or another, including (asian) Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, Celts and other Germanic tribes wore them too (viking with dreads happened at some point, which is pretty cool IMHO).
I particularly dislike dreadlocks being used as an example of cultural appropriation, because whether we see eye to eye on the whole cultural appropriation thing or not, they aren't even a real example of this phenomenon anyway.

I also don't like the idea of a group calling "dibs" and vetoing someone else's self expression. There's no good reason for any person in a decent, not-butthurt society to be vilified for wearing a particular hairstyle that they happen to like.

octagon wrote:

I don't think anyone (rational) believes there's a conspiracy going on. What I do see from where I'm standing, is that certain people with particular "SJW" views are becoming more aggressive and (in contrast to their own claims) less tolerant of other points of view over the years. It's more appropriately described as a natural trend or evolution of a particular movement. A change for the worse in my view. I used to identify strongly with the left a few years ago, back when it actually supported pluralism and discussion. Things have gone pretty sour circa early 2015 and have been slowly getting more effed up.

octagon wrote:

Not strictly implying anything, but I actually thought you were referring to Purple with this sentence until I read the next few lines. I haven't read their conversation, but I feel that from Woody's standpoint, a reply of the kind Woody described in his post can be viewed as a zealous attack.

Hey Octy, nice to hear from you again. I immediately thought to chide that you hadn't dropped by one of my streams or anything in a while, but then I remembered that I haven't done much of any such thing in longer than that.

Regarding the social and political everything, I still don't know what to think of it all because of how complex an issue it is, but I do find it exasperating when supporters for any side forgo actual discussion and prefer the sounds of their own protesting voices to trying to take steps to reach any conclusion or betterment. So I have respect for anyone with any views who don't mistake their means for their goal.
Sometimes I feel like I should start soapboxing to lobby for such a thing, but it'd probably still be preaching to a choir and just make me look self-important. :?
