I would like something a bit rougher. Something that is more in line with the low polygon, 8-bit-ish, retro look of Egoboo.

The original font was a bit too rough at times, because it made certain things hard to read. :(

Yeah, it looks nice.. but Negatori is all rough and cool. 8) lol

I would like to suggest another font of Hiran called perizia

I think Aaron used his self-built 'Kanji Tool' to do the lettering in a non-font way.

Zefz's picture of the font looks too generic, and it is missing the '. Egoboo needs a less generic font for all our needs!

Hmm... maybe we should have a collaboration of creating a font for Egoboo?

I have been toying around with making a font that is like a Celtic font crossed with an "art deco" font. I was thinking Celtic because it is a kind of fantasy font, and it has quite a few shared characteristics with a bauhaus art deco font.

If we want to go with something like Negatori, I would suggest something like a rune-like font that is a little more legible or something that looks cuneiform.

I will try to post something soon if I can figure out a way to make the font that won't take hours and hours.

Well, I'm in trouble now ... My kids love Egoboo. The problem is, it has been (sob, sniff) removed from Debian Squeeze! So it falls to me now to see if I can make my kids happy again by seeing what needs to be done to get it back in again and, if necessary, do it myself ... or at least help those looking after Egoboo already in Debian to take care of it.

I guess in addition to the fact that 2.7.7 is unusably slow and we had some FTBFS (Failure To Build from Source) bugs for non-x86 architectures with that version, the bigger issue is (bleah) font licensing. I applaud your efforts to correct this situation, but knowing Debian's exacting standards there are these worrying things about the font files I found in 2.8.1:

On the web, licensing of Bo Chen says public domain / GPL (yay!) but it doesn't distribute with a license file and the font properties say "all rights reserved" (boo! in fact, i think pretty much all of the font files say this ... maybe some 'boilerplate' license text the font creation program puts there that the author neglected to change?)

Mael ships with a readme containing this text:
"this font is provided free for personal or commercial use, it can be redistributed however it may not be sold."

Doesn't sound GPL-compatible to me. Is Mael actually used in the latest release?

So to get this back into Debian (and I guess it would trickle down to Ubuntu too, since they're stuck back at 2.7.7 too) we would at the very least need an unambiguous license statement from each font author to include in the source.

Oh, and please don't shoot the messenger ;) I know licenses for game data can be a royal pain, but if we can only sort this out (and it sounds like we're close) then I'm willing to put in whatever effort I can from my side to make sure this excellent game gets back into Debian. (Think of the children!)

p.s. What about the other font files? Are those all made by contributors to the project? If so then I guess you won't have any problem coming up with license statements for each of them:

Mael is not used in the latest release. The other fonts are made by the community.

The current menu font is GPL compliant. We have done everything we could (including changing the entire file system for egoboo) to make the linux people happy so that we can get Egoboo 2.8.1 (soon to be 2.8.2) in the linux repository.

Why? I mean, how I've thought what that sentence means: it can be used for commercial stuff if the font file isn't included (it's used in images) and however you want for non-commercial stuff.

...I might be wrong though?

The font itself would be usable, yes. But if I recall correctly, things included in stuff licensed with GPL must be freely usable without exceptions - even for commercial stuff.
