I think this idea would be a really interesting thing. Maybe you could do this with a specifical system with e. g. three or four overlays (one for skin, one for hair, one for clothes etc.) that can be colorized before the beginning of the starter module. I don't know if this could be done in Egoboo without major changes of the EgoScript language etc., and in any way it will be a lot of work to do, but the results would be very nice. Since there are NPC with individual skins like Alric the Pet Trader, I know how amazing it would be to have every character look a bit special.

This could be obtained by some degree by implementing enough classes and class specializations. Many heroes start out the same, but as they advance, they will become more unique (new skins, turn into hero classes, etc.). There are even special cases where your Elf can turn into a Jive Elf when starting the Elf Starter.

I always thought it would be good to have a popup window where you could choose special abilities when you level up. Right now because the progression of special abilities is generated by the character script, so this is not completely possible.
BUT some abilities are given by tagging the character's data.txt with an expansion.... These could be bought or awarded by completing certain quests, rather than being given out at character creation.

I agree. Letting the player select and upgrade specific skills (and even upgrade specific stats like Strength or Intelligence) would be much better than what we have now. But again as you said, not possible with the current system. Would be a lot of work to rewrite and implement a new UI to handle it.
But that personal upgrading system should also be limited and reglemented, maybe using the "Life up", "Dexterity up" etc. values... what means, if you have a Strength Up 1.00-3.00, the Strength stat gets automatical increased by 1 point and you can increase it by up to 3 points, if you have some experience points left to manage. These reglementations should be there to prevent sage Vikings and herculean Wizards... that would completely ruin the gameplay and atmosphere.
