Adding new symbols

Post by Seth »

¶ I suppose this addition would be too minor to use, but surely it would not be very difficult or time‐consuming to handle? Regardless, it could be finished later if appealed! For re‐writing: I could take the task if desired; I do have a keyboard that supports most of these characters.
¶ This kind of request would most likely be deemed more important for interlingual purposes rather than English usage, and nobody has recently offered any translations. However, I do know some symbols that could be useful in Egoboo’s writing, especially in (re‐)naming Egoboo concepts due to how unusual some of these characters are in modern English. I personally recommend:
  • 1. , quæstion and exclamation hybrid.
    2. , convenient ellipsis.
    3. Æ/æ, Œ/œ, could convey a more archaic feel in English.
    4. , , ©, ®, if only because these would be hilarious.
    5. Ø/ø, Å/å, for interlingual sake.
    6. Characters, at least vowels, with an acute accent.
    7. Vowels with a grave accent.
¶ What are your thoughts on this?

The current way strings are handled in Egoboo makes it impossible to translate. All the strings are scattered over hundreds of different message files.

I think only the copyright, registered trademark, trademark etc. symbols would be worth considering; the others are just a bit too obsessive-compulsive to have in the game text or to spend the effort adding into the font files.

The ttf font (Bo Chen) has no real support for unicode, but we could always change to a different font. Mael and Bo Chen are both hand-lettered comic type fonts, so anything that is GPL compliant and similar could be used as a direct replacement.

The bitmapped font is much less likely to be changed, since it was hand crafted.

Could we replace the bitmapped font with the true type font?

Yes. But there is no easy way of getting the multi-colored text that we have now.

You mean that "shading"? It would be interesting to see how ttf looked instead of the bitmap font. I wonder how it would effect performance as well. ttf must have more optimized drawing routines than what we use now.
