Fast weapon cooldown

Post by Maxaxle »

Maxaxle wrote:I think that, as a cooldown for characters with uber-fast attacks, the attack speed should gradually slow down as the character tires, or perhaps you can only attack quickly for a short amount of time (3 seconds?), and then it defaults to what the character's weapon swing speed would be without that ability.

This could improve balancing, but it could also backfire and make attack speed very unimportant and useless, turning classes like Rogue or Elf into total jokes...

I like it how it is right now, but it still could - could - be an improvement. But it needs to be done carefully.

To prevent people from staying in place (maybe rotating) and gluing down the attack button to deal with tons of enemies.

However, on second thought, maybe this cooldown shouldn't apply if the character is moving.

Because there are usually tons of enemies in a room, and they all come to attack you at the same time.

Remember, this doesn't affect normal-attack-speed weapons.

I take it that AoD doesn't exactly approve, so I'll count his vote as a "nay". And as Octagon said earlier, it needs to be done carefully, so that if it is added to Egoboo, it will be added after a long while of beta testing.

Damn, sorry, I was a little worried about the harshness, just tried to carry it with the sarcasm.

No big deal, but I'm mostly wondering why you don't like the idea.

It just sounds too complex - I like Egoboo as a really simple game, where it's more 'Press X to not die' than 'Press X and once Y has happened, press X again' or whatever. This just seems like unnecessary complexity.

I get what you mean, but this is to combat players simply standing in place and holding the attack button (you can kill tons of Cobols in the Rogue Starter by standing in place with a Knife and holding T or Y).

Right tool in the right hands, we shouldn't penalise people for picking the right thing.

I mean that we should keep people from standing in place and holding down a button (as opposed to *gasp* actual combat!). I mean, the Soldier Starter is balanced because the Soldier cannot shield himself simply by swinging his sword randomly (enemies can hit him between swings).

*le bump*

A much simpler and, in my opinion, better solution to this would be to give more enemies ranged attacks. Not necessarily those almost-impossible-to-dodge longbows or crossbows, but rather some kind of ranged attack that isn't very hard to dodge if you keep moving.
